Clutter

So I'm too lazy to go find my camera and upload a picture of my gigantic mess, but I want to know how you deal with clutter. I HATE clutter and I feel like I spend more time reorganizing my sewing room than I do actually sewing.

Quick frankly I'm feeling like I like the idea of "less is more". Clutter brings me down. I feel bad getting rid of stuff and think to myself "oh I should eBay some of this", but then that idea reminds me how labor intensive it is to do that. Pictures, listings, weighing for shipping, collecting money, going to the post office - that whole thing turns me off right now. I could just shove everything I don't want into a closet and deal with it later when the weather turns, but I'm sure that is the worst answer possible. I guess I need to have it in writing that it's okay to just get rid of stuff. One man's junk is another man's treasure, right? So I'm going to finish cleaning and then go through and see if anything is eBay worthy and the rest is going to the Senior Center where they can make quilts and other projects.

That is my vent for the day. So how do you deal with this? I feel so unproductive and I hate it. I'm sick of dealing with this. I like having a small stash of fabric, patterns, & notions, but they make more of all this every day. I feel like I'm hording and that makes me uneasy. I like the simple life I guess. Maybe I'll be brave and share pictures later, that is if I find my camera...

P.S. This all started because yesterday I realized my serger wasn't working properly. Upon closer inspection I see something is broken on the throat plate. Took it to the dealer and he said, "yep, you need a new throat plate, you must really use this machine a lot because I've only seen this one other time". Well duh, I bought it to use, not sit and collect dust. Thankfully the part is only about $30, but will not be in until next Thursday, hence the reason I'm cleaning and not sewing.

I have defined areas of how much space my "stuff" can take up. Just because I clear off a closet shelf - doesn't make the shelf up for grabs for more stuff! I donate alot of craft/sewing stuff to my niece's school - the art & drama depts. always seem desperate for things. I share many of my fabrics and scraps with other quilters (but for quilting - you sometimes just need a "snip". The best thing ever though... my sewing table is an old desk - I keep most of my notions/threads/etc. in the desk - easy to get to when I am sewing and out of sight when I'm not. Good luck.

Gosh, that sound like my dilemma. I try to organize and then become overwhelmed. I have alot, too. I just deal with it in snippets after each project and have scrap boxes for appliques/quilting,etc.

Oh Melissa, I too dislike the clutter, especially in a sewing area!!! However, I do think it is good to have a little stash of fabric/notions/etc. The trick is keeping it organized and knowing what you have!!!

Your comment about hording really hit home. I accuse DH of this but never really considered my huge stash of patterns and fabric to be hording. I see a purge in my future too.

My sewing clutter is starting to get to me too, especially now I have less time to sew. As for selling stuff on ebay or similar - I came to an arrangement with my sister who likes spending time doing that. I provide the stuff, she does the listing and anything it gets we go halves on.

Not the person to give advise on not stashing. I'm terrible about stashing. Out of control. Good luck.

How interesting that your topic is what has been plaguing me, too! I have more fabric than I'm ever going to sew up up, more patterns than I'll ever use but yet - the more I'm overwhelmed by my clutter, the more I feel like buying new clutter. It's crazy!!!

I am incredibly grateful to be in a financial position just to give away whatever I don't want. It made a huge difference in my life when I realized that. Sure, I could sell things on eBay/Craigslist/what have you, but the thing I want is to have them out of my life, not money. I had been holding onto tons of stuff because it still had some value, but it had no value *to me.* Poof, gone, happy.

Of course, this does not in any way mean I am not surrounded by mounds of clutter. Heh.

I can totally relate. Clutter stresses me out--but I still have clutter. Several bins of stuff for eBay....can't bear to give it away, but it IS a lot more work than people think listing stuff on eBay. The fabric stash is another issue...I don't consider that clutter! :)

Clutter is the bane of so many of us.
